Blackened

The project examined the situation of workers facing an uncertain future and the camaraderie of those sickened by decades of underground work. Broken knees, herniated discs and black lung disease were typical. In the worst cases inhaled coal dust can lead to malignant forms of silicosis. The large number of offshore factories investing and moving in to extract raw materials does not improve the situation of the miners who continue to pull rickshaws for a living after retirement. Fortunately, the pits are also open to outsiders, and it remains to be seen whether this will make a difference to the indigenous people's way of life.
